The Scent of a Hotel

January 01, 1970 12.00 AM

Certain hotel scents linger in your mind long after you’ve checked out, with a few so incredible you\'ll want to take them home with you. For some it’s the lemony verbena Miller Harris bath products at Firmdale Hotels that’s ubiquitous of a trip to London. For others, it’s those Bamford Body toiletries at Claridge’s or Penhaligon’s that grace bathroom counters at both the Brown’s Hotel and Belgraves.

The memory of Paris often conjures up those La Prairie products found in the bathrooms at the old Ritz or the full-size facial and body lotions from Dior at Plaza Athenee. Four Seasons Hotel George V Paris gifts you with a full regimen of Bulgari Green Tea products that despite being available in abundance worldwide is a fragrant perk. In Milan you’ll find a showier display of Acqua di Parma at Hotel Principe di Savoia and REN products at Rome’s Hotel de Russie.

More obscure industry favorites include Charlotte Rhys products at the One&Only Cape Town. At California’s Post Ranch Inn bathrooms are adorned in a mix of toiletries by Santa Cruz’s Boony Doon Farm while Hotel de Paris in Monaco only uses Hermes Eau d’Orange Vert. But perhaps the chicest hotel smell in the business remains the sweet scent of Eau d’Italie by Le Sirenuse that’s a Positano memory of “sun on the skin and sun-warmed terracotta” that’s the best hotel fragrance ever created.
